Smith & Deli in Collingwood: Exploring Vegan Options in Melbourne

A Vegan Paradise in Melbourne

Staying in Melbourne has been an incredible experience, especially for someone passionate about vegan cuisine. Melbourne is impressively vegan-friendly, with countless options available at every corner. It’s a haven for those who enjoy plant-based eating, and I find myself thoroughly impressed by the variety and quality of vegan offerings here. One standout is Smith & Deli in Collingwood: exploring vegan options in Melbourne doesn’t get better than this.

Smith & Deli: From Fitzroy Roots to Collingwood Charm

Smith & Deli originally opened its doors on Moor Street in Fitzroy as an extension of the beloved Smith & Daughters restaurant, founded by Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse in 2014. Their goal was to create a space that showcased vegan cuisine in a way that was both indulgent and accessible, appealing to vegans and non-vegans alike. The deli quickly gained a reputation for its creative plant-based takes on traditional deli fare and a wide array of vegan groceries.

The move to Collingwood has allowed Smith & Deli to expand its offerings and ambiance. While I never had the opportunity to visit it in Fitzroy, the new location retains the spirit of innovation and community that has always been central to its identity.

A Feast for the Senses

Smith & Deli offers a dream come true for food lovers. Whether you’re planning to dine in, grab a takeaway, or shop for your evening meal, the options are endless. On my visits, I found myself overwhelmed by the choices available, but in the best way possible. The first time, I over-ordered out of sheer excitement. By the second visit, I came prepared and ready to savor every bite. The Seasonal Veg Frittata, German Potato Salad, kale Caesar Salad salad, and The Egg-Orsist Sandwich I tried were all exceptionally delicious, each offering a unique burst of flavor. My friend had the Foghorn Legless, which he seemed to enjoy. The food is truly out of this world, making it a must-visit for anyone in the area.

Vision and Ethics

The vision of Smith & Deli, like that of Smith & Daughters, centers around the belief that vegan food can be both satisfying and sustainable. Shannon Martinez, although not vegan herself, is passionate about breaking down the barriers surrounding plant-based cuisine, making it appealing to a broad audience. The deli’s commitment to quality and creativity is matched by its dedication to ethical practices, ensuring that all offerings are 100% plant-based and produced with care for both people and the planet.

Welcoming Atmosphere and Friendly Faces

The staff at Smith & Deli are incredibly friendly, adding to the delightful experience. Despite being super busy, which is a testament to their popularity, the atmosphere remains happy and calm. The large space buzzes with positive energy, and any wait for food seems insignificant compared to the joy of seeing a plant-based place thriving.
