Cathedral City Plant-Based Mature Cheddar Grated – vegan cheese packaging on wooden kitchen counter

Cathedral City Plant-Based Mature Cheddar (Grated) – Is It Actually Any Good?

As a self-proclaimed cheese connoisseur, I’ve spent far too long hunting for a vegan cheese that doesn’t taste like disappointment. Cathedral City’s Plant-Based Mature Cheddar Flavour (Grated) actually delivers – rich, sharp, and gloriously moo-free.

Taste Test: Worth the Hype?

Let’s talk flavour. Both the grated and block versions taste practically identical – rich, slightly tangy, and more cheddar-like than most of the weird plasticky stuff out there. I always go for the grated. Why? Because grating cheese is one of life’s most unnecessary chores.

The grated one melts beautifully over pasta (which I may or may not be eating while writing this). The block’s great for toasties or sandwiches. Either way, this doesn’t taste like sad compromise – it tastes like cheese.

Nutritional Breakdown: Healthy or Just Hyped?

Here’s what you’re getting per 100g of Cathedral City Plant-Based Mature Cheddar (Grated):

  • Energy: 1228kJ / 296kcal
  • Fat: 22g
  • Saturates: 19g
  • Carbohydrates: 23g
  • Sugars: <0.5g
  • Protein: 0g
  • Salt: 1.8g
  • Calcium: 200mg (25% of RI)

Is it a health food? Absolutely not. But you’re dodging cholesterol and hormones from cow’s milk, so it’s a solid swap in that department.

Yes, it’s high in saturated fat (thank you, coconut oil), but no one is pretending this is kale. It’s comfort food, and vegans get to have junk food too. Most of us live on rice, lentils, and vegetables – we’ve earned this.

What’s Actually in It?

Here’s the ingredient list:

  • Water
  • Coconut Oil (22%)
  • Modified Starch
  • Starch
  • Maize Starch
  • Acidity Regulators (Lactic Acid, Citric Acid)
  • Calcium Phosphate
  • Salt
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Colour (Carotenes)
  • Flavourings

No nasty surprises. It’s free from dairy, gluten, and that weird fake-cheese aftertaste.

Real Verdict: Should You Try It?

If you’re after a vegan cheddar that actually melts, tastes like cheese, and doesn’t make you question your life choices – this is it.

Cathedral City Plant-Based Mature Cheddar (Grated) is probably the best I’ve found. Even my non-vegan friends have admitted it’s decent, which is basically a five-star review.
