A Tempting Discovery
As I strolled along the Danube in Vienna, a vibrant green sign boldly declaring “vegan” caught my eye. Was I hungry? Not a chance! Did I suddenly crave whatever deliciousness this place had to offer? Absolutely!
The Hot Dog Kiosk Experience
With a spring in my step, I ascended the steps to a charming little food kiosk—Extra Wurstel—where hot dogs reigned supreme. How could I resist the call of an Austrian vegan hot dog paired with a cold beer? Spoiler alert: I couldn’t!
Friendly Faces Behind the Counter
I approached the counter, where two friendly men were busy cleaning the coffee machine. I couldn’t resist asking if they sold vegan hot dogs. Sure, it might have seemed like a silly question, but hey, the sign was in German! After a quick confirmation that they indeed had vegan options, I was sold. “One vegan hot dog with all the trimmings, please!”
Choosing the Perfect Beer
Next up was the beer dilemma. The Austrian guy recommended the local brew, while the German guy suggested a German option. Since I was in Austria, I confidently went with the Austrian choice! Their friendliness and helpfulness made the decision even easier.
A Thoughtful Touch on the Bill
When it came time to pay, they mentioned a 30-cent bottle tax, which I’d get back when I returned the bottle. Brilliant idea! I added a tip to my total—because in Austria, not tipping is simply a faux pas. Just remember, leaving cash on the table as you exit is a no-go!
A Vegan Hot Dog Worth Celebrating
Finally, my hot dog arrived, and I may have jumped up in excitement, even though it wasn’t lunchtime yet. And let me tell you, the hot dog was nothing short of spectacular! Nestled in a soft yet crusty baguette called Wiener Simmel—a popular choice in Austria for holding sausages—this vegan masterpiece featured a succulent vegan sausage, creamy vegan cheese, zesty vegan mayo, tangy tomato sauce, and crispy zwiebelringe (fried onions). The explosion of flavors was out of this world! Plus, it was wrapped so perfectly that not a single topping dared to escape.
